Area Pictures of Wichita Kansas
It started as a dusty expanse of badlands inhabited by the Wichita, Pawnee, and Kansas tribes. It was transformed into a hell-raising cow town on the Chisholm Trail, its motto boasting "Everything goes in Wichita" -- despite the efforts of lawman Wyatt Earp.
Now home to a half-million residents, the largest city in Kansas is the state's cultural and commercial capital. Named an All-American City in 1999 by the National League of Cities, Wichita hosts one of the country's best river festivals and wins my vote for having the second-coolest university nickname (behind Florida A&M's "Rattlers"): the Wichita State "Shockers."
