The United States' development from agricultural to industrial giant is reflected by the evolution of Wichita, Kansas. Now a hub of aviation technology, Wichita is the base of the Chisholm Trail, one of the primary Mexico-to-Kansas cattle driving routes in the mid- to late- 1800s. Since then, this heartland city has earned the titles "oil capital of Kansas" and "air capital" of the United States.

Wichita is proud of its heartland history. The Old Cowtown Museum is a 17-acre living museum that takes visitors back to life in the Great Plains in the late 1800s. The Native American cultures that predominated in the region (including the Wichita Indians, for whom the city is named), still contribute to the cultural heritage of the town. And the wildlife for which the West became synonymous -- buffalo, bison, and antelope -- are showcased in local zoos, Nature Center dioramas, and paintings by the celebrated artist Charles M. Russell. (courtesy of smartpages)
