That a community of 660 people can annually host Kansas' Largest Night Rodeo, one of the main events on the Kansas social calendar, is a tribute to the vision of those four founders and to the fortitude of the hundreds of volunteers who have maintained that vision.
At a time when dust clouds from the south regularly brought dark despair, Harry Graber, Merle Graber, Harry Kautzer and W.W. Graber flipped on the high school football field lights and put on a show. There was rollicking entertainment beneath those lights in 1936, and was a welcome break from the relentless depression. But, most importantly, when those lights came on there was hope. The professional cowboys that compete here are some of the top contenders for a berth at the National Finals Rodeo, Las Vegas, Nevada in December. These professional athletes are serious but approachable. You can hang over the small fenced area and join in their preparatory banter. And the action in the arena is close enough to see the cracks in the clown's make-up. This isn't couch potato spectating; all 5,000 of you are key players each night.
